About the Item

Extremely rare original wood sculpture by Wenzel Profant (1913-1989). Absolute minimalist carved shape featuring a monk or a knight, with Profant engraved monogram signature on bottom side. Luxembourg, circa 1950s. Excellent vintage condition. Measurements: 8.25 in. wide (21 cm) x 5.94 in. deep (15 cm) x 26.38 in. high (67 cm) About the artist: Wenzel Profant was born in Luxembourg in 1913 and died in 1989. During his studies at the Ecole des Arts et Métiers in Esch-sur-Alzette, he copied the works of the great painters he discovers in illustrated and books. At the age of seventeen, he began his own career as a sculptor, working mostly on order by making bas-reliefs and sculptures for private clientele. Already before 1940, Profant tended towards abstraction. It simplifies shapes and neglects details looking for decorative stylization or conquest of perfect harmony. With the German occupation during WWII, Profant is active in the Resistance. Pursued by the Gestapo, he had to take the road to France, Spain and North Africa, to finally arrived in England where he joined the English Army. His experience of the WWII slowed down his progressive spirit and his art regressed to an earlier stage, that of realistic figuration: "the time to regain ease in forms and proportions", as he said himself. In 1954 Profant exhibited a cycle of five wooden sculptures, each representing a stage in human life: childhood, youth, maturity, maternity and old age. The artist specialized in monumental and medium-sized sculptures of stone, granite, metal and wood. Most of his works are characterized by soft forms, rounded, inspired by nature, in which the shadow and the light give the relay. Profant himself comments on his abstract works as follows: "Form and metamorphose into the material, the feeling of sensation, such as joy, distress, fear, enjoyment and thus definitively fix them in space and in time". During his lifetime, Profant was very successful with an impressive number of exhibitions both in Luxembourg and abroad (Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, England, Italy, France and the United States).
