About the Item

Bust of Classic style, following models of the Roman portrait, representing a bearded man, of serene expression, dressed in armor and mantel and covered by a helmet. The carnations are carved in white marble, with a polished finish on the skin and rougher in the beard, mustache and hair, looking for a more naturalism. In contrast, the armor, mantel and helmet are carved using four different types of marble, achieving a decorative effect of great beauty, which combines green, reddish and earthy shades. Formally, it is also important to note the great quality of the carving, not only in the face but also in the details of the clothing, meticulously described, and especially appreciable in the deep and folded naturalists of the mantel. The portrait was one of the most original and characteristic manifestations of Roman art. The origin of the Roman portrait appears more linked to a concept than to a plastic expression, and reflects like no other artistic genre the vital philosophy of that town. In its formation it is possible to detect three roots: the Etrusco-italic, the Greek and the autochthonous stream of the "maiorum imagines" or funeral masks. The combination of all of them will result in an unmistakable and genuine work which, despite the logical differences gradually imbued by the Provincial workshops, will evolve parallel in all the territories of the Roman Empire. The portrait of the Republican era is already interested in the serious and serious personality of the models, especially of the rulers, contributing an energy and a decision to the statues that we also find in this bust. At first they were busts that only picked up the head and part of the neck, but they will gradually lengthen reaching to represent also the shoulders and the chest. There were also full body and equestrian portraits, although this last formula will be used only for the emperors. In fact the emperor is the most frequent model of Roman sculpture, constituting the model for the rest of portraits, private. Size: 74 x 34 x 98 cms.
