"Two Centaurs, " Highly Important Original Maquette for Palais de Tokyo, 1937
About the Item
A classic and important example of stylized Art Deco figural sculpture, this bas relief of two centaurs -- a father centaur being embraced by a baby centaur -- is the original plaster maquette by Marcel Armand Gaumont for a sculpture adorning the facade of the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, original built as the Palais des Musées d'Art Moderne in 1937. This piece is dedicated to Gaumont's friend, J. Hardy, who wrote for Monsieur magazine in the 1920s. The Palais is one of two major buildings (with elaborate landscapes and water features) surviving from the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne (the other being the Palais de Chaillot), both located along the Seine. Gaumont also executed several other mythological reliefs, including one showing an archer, Hercules and the Hydra, and a merman and mermaid.
