Inkstone with Landscape Motif
About the Item
Some rare forms of calligraphy ink come in solid rather than liquid form and are manufactured according to a formula which has remained unchanged for centuries. Soot, collected from small “soot rooms” where charcoal and/or wood are burned, is mixed with animal sizing, or glue. This mixture is then kneaded and compressed into special molds. The solid block of ink may then be painted or gilded. Oftentimes, the ink is laced with the scent of sandalwood or other perfumes.
This 20th century Duan stone inkstone is a virtuoso example of the carver’s art. It does honor to the Chinese tradition of panoramic and sacred landscape, but with deep relief carving and incredible detail. In addition to the dense mountain foliage, be sure to note the figures crossing the bridge to their scholarly retreat (center right), waterfalls (bottom right), a cliff-side meditation shelter (upper left) and the archaic cloud-forms above, which make clever use of the stone’s natural “eyes” as mentioned above.
