Space Race Moon Landing July 20, 1969 Apollo 11 Large Brutalist Steel Sculpture

About the Item

Unique and very large, One of a kind - Mid-Century period Brutalist Artisan made & hand crafted Space Sculpture paying homage to the Apollo 11 moon landing on July 20, 1969. Brutalist techniques used to make the tripod form base and spiral that holds Earth. Earth too has brutalist bronze brazing forming the continents, with dark teal paint used to illustrate water. On top of planet Earth silver color rocket ship with bronze letters - USA on side with sections of gears demonstrating the grind to get to the Moon. Then attaches helix style steel arms with bronze letters 20 July 1969 + E = mc2 ending with bronze hands reaching towards the moon and solar system. The Moon with attached steel American Flag, represents Neil Armstrong's walk on the Moon, who famously said "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.", Then finally our solar system attaches to the Moon. The sculpture is set up on how I think it should be, the arm from Earth to the Moon, cantilevers off the gears etc, a little tricky to get it balanced right or locked in place. Sculpture is signed with embossed signature in copper plate on Earth, but I can't make it out. Base is 27" x 23" , 75.25" h to rocket ship, Earth is 11' diameter. From Wiki: Apollo 11 (July 16–24, 1969) was the American spaceflight that first landed humans on the Moon. Commander Neil Armstrong and Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin landed the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle on July 20, 1969, at 20:17 UTC, and Armstrong became the first person to step onto the Moon's surface six hours and 39 minutes later, on July 21 at 02:56 UTC. Aldrin joined him 19 minutes later, and they spent about two and a quarter hours together exploring the site they had named Tranquility Base upon landing. Armstrong and Aldrin collected 47.5 pounds (21.5 kg) of lunar material to bring back to Earth as pilot Michael Collins flew the Command Module Columbia in lunar orbit, and were on the Moon's surface for 21 hours, 36 minutes before lifting off to rejoin Columbia.
