About the Item

18th century Italian gilded candlestick mounted with a pearlescent oyster shell and adorned with gold leaf shells. The 18th century Italian candlestick is originally from a historical church in Liguria, northeast of Italy. This was an altar candlestick and the white and gold color is a common characteristic of design and decoration of churches along the coastline. The candlestick has a natural forming oyster shell with baroque pearls. The shells are hand-gilded and aged to coordinate with the piece. The gold leaf shells also adorn the candlestick as well as polished mother of pearl pieces. The shells have also been applied as feet to make it look like as though the piece evolved together overtime. The piece is put together by Jean O'Reilly Barlow, the artist and creative director of Interi. The date of manufacture reflects when she transformed the piece and the period shows that the candlestick is originally 18th century. Together, the Italian church artifact and natural elements are combined to create a contemporary and historical work of art.
