Large Antique Neoclassical Style Plaster Plaque

About the Item

A large antique neoclassical style oval plaster wall plaque. Dating back to circa 1950, this decorative piece has kept its original handcrafted details. It depicts an allegorical and mythological scene. The large male figure is Bacchus, a God associated with wine and intoxication. His body is covered in a drape while he holds a thyrsus, a staff or spear tipped with an ornament like pinecone - known to be carried by Bacchus and his followers. His shield is leaning on the ground near his feet while an angel on an iconic column gives him the laurel wreath. This piece is made of heavy solid plaster and the scene is well sculpted - it is a fragment of neoclassical history that would take pride of place in any home.

This 20th century plaster depiction is an intricate example of the bucranium, modelled in plaster in high relief and mounted on a bespoke steel stand for display...

Dating from the 1850s, this carved limestone antique plaque depicts the head of a lion within hand carved chain links, some of which have been lost through the ages. It is more than 170 years old and likely once formed part of a larger piece together with this matching plaque. Perhaps it was once part of a keystone above an entranceway or a family crest wall decoration in the prestigious courtyard of a large estate. Made from fine grained limestone, it has a weathered finish that only time can create and yet the lion plaque...
