About the Item

One of the most rare car mascots (hood ornament) in the world, made for AGFA in the roaring 1920s. This AGFA lady is silvered (nor chromed nor nickeled) and the design is based upon an AGFA film poster from Marcello Dudovich from 1922. AGFA had mobile photo laboratory’s in 1928 and probably this lady was an advertising car mascot or even belonged to the owner of AGFA. As far as I know only one other model is known, not silvered. Marcello Dudovich (born in 1878 in Trieste) was considered a leading innovator in advertising art during the early part of the 20th century. He was working in Milan, Bologna and Munich. For three consecutive years, he was the winner of the poster contest for the Feste di Primavera in Bologna. In 1900 he wins a Gold Medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris and in 1917 he designs various film posters in Turin. In 1920 he founds Star, an agency that plans advertising campaigns for some of Italy's major industries. From 1922 to 1936 he is appointed artistic director of the Industria Generale Affissioni Pubblicitarie. The history of AGFA goes back to the nineteenth century and is a long and illustrous record of innovation and technological leadership. A Belgian 'photo products' business and a German color dye manufacturer joined forces and grew into an internationally renowned company in the graphic and healthcare industries. AGFA was the abbreviation for Aktien-Gesellschaft für Anilin-Fabrikation, given in 1873 In 1916 AGFA began developing materials for color photography. One of the pioneers was Dr. Rudolf Fischer from Berlin. AGFA was the only company that continued to improve color photography throughout the 1920s until, in the 1930s, their efforts finally paid off. Most famous is the film developer Rodinal, introduced in 1892 and continued for 115 years. When AGFA obtained the Rietzschel camera works in Munich from Bayer in 1925, it badged all Rietzschel products with its AGFA rhombus. In 1926 it introduced the first real AGFA camera, the Standard. In 1927 the name Rietzschel disappeared from the products. In that year the successful Billy camera series was introduced and AGFA licensed Ansco to manufacture its products for the American market. The lady stands 21.0 cm high without socket and 27.0 cm with socket and is in good vintage condition. Diameter: 20.0 cm.
