Illinois Pyrite Suns on a Matrix

About the Item

A spectacular, naturally formed arrangement of three pyrite suns on a matrix sourced from Illinois, North America. Also known as sand dollars, these minerals have a flat, disk-like shape and bright metallic lustre formed by immense pressure over millions of years. While some individual pyrite suns are later mounted onto a matrix, these sand dollars are naturally occurring, still attached to the shale host rock where they were originally formed! This spectacular specimen comes mounted on a metal stand as pictured, perfect for display. The Illinois Coal Fields Some of the largest and finest pyrite sun specimens come from Sparta, Illinois. Here there is vast coal basin of 300-million-year-old sediments, providing some of the rarest forms of concretionary pyrite. Additional Information Mounted on a metal stand. Weight specimen & stand: 10 kg
