Labradorite XL Front Polished

About the Item

151 kg. Labradorite is named after the Canadian peninsula of Labrador where the rock was first found and described. It is a plagioclase feldspar that rarely if ever forms crystals and if crystals do occur they are almost always fused. One usually finds labradorite in a massive, compact form. It is then blue, gray, white or colorless. The play of colors of labradorite, called labradorization, makes the stone very popular. The metallic shades with often green and blue effects make the stone extremely suitable for jewelry, although polishing is not easy. The play of colors is probably caused by interference phenomena from twin lamellae, the translucency and the glass luster. The mineral is an important component of a number of magmatic and metamorphic rocks, such as basalt, diorite and andesite. Labradorite is found in many places. In addition to Labrador and Newfoundland, the stone is found in Russia, Ukraine, and nowadays the best known site Madagascar. In Finland a type of labradorite is also found with very beautiful spectral colors. It has become the national stone of Finland and is called spectrolite. Labradorite belongs to the constellation Cancer. Many call the stone "the aura protector" because it protects against negative energy. Also, labradorite is called "mirror for your latent talents." This particular piece is polished on one side. Even on the completely rough back side, the beautiful play of colors can still be seen, a typical feature for the best quality labradorite. Ampanihy, Madagascar.
