French late 19th century spelter sculpture by Hippolyte Moreau fitted with original 1 7/8" thick rouge griotte marble base. Hippolyte was one of the famous Moreau brothers, all of whom were sculptors. He was born in Dijon France in 1832 and died in 1927. This statue, in a warm chocolate brown patina depicts a diaphanously dressed woman with flowing scarf overhead and winged cherob at her side resting on the crest of a wave and shell. Hippolyte Moreau exhibited in the Salon des Artistes Français at the turn of the century and won a medal at the Universal Exposition in 1878 and another at the 1900 World Expo. One of the finest living American sculptors, William Behrends created and sculpted this spectacular over life-size bronze polo player. He created portrait work for the White House, State Capitol buildings in D.C and Tennessee, for the Houston Astrodome and has won many commissions for monuments across the US. For over a quarter of a century, nationally celebrated, William Behrends has created the iconic portraits on the Borg- Warner Trophy cup for the Indy 500 winners along with other commissions. He is a popular portraitist and has twice received the Richard portrait Prize by the National Sculpture Society in recognition of his expertise in evoking the character of his sitters in bronze, marble as well as terracotta. Mr. Behrends has sculpted life-size statues of the four great baseball legends Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Juan Marichal and Orlando Cepeda which reside at Oracle Park, home of the San Francisco Giants (Giants/ AT&T ballpark). A rare and fabulous French Art Deco large bronze signed sculpture of a bunting panther by Andre Vincent Becquerel, French, 1893-1981 This lovely cast, in a warm dark brown patina with green undertones is sculpted with highly stylized anatomical details. The sculpture rests on self base. Becquerel's favorite subject matter was cats. He often captured them in a natural setting, stretching, stalking, clawing at a tree stump or walking in tandem. The model offered here with the panther bunting/rubbing against a stump of a tree is a rare version. This innate feline behavior is seen as a sign of affection, or of a transfer of their scent to claim territory or marking you as a friend. Becquerel was born in northern France. He attended the École des Beaux-arts in Paris and studied in the ateliers of Hector Lemaître and Prosper Lecourtier, the Animalier sculptor. He also worked with Charles Valton, who had studied under both Barye and Fremiet, two other renown animalier sculptors. He began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1914 and continued to do so for the rest of his career. In 1944 Becquerel was awarded a bronze medal by The ‘Artistes Français’ and a gold medal in 1945. In 1952 he won the Prix de l’Yser, which made him hors concours and thus above the future competition process. Important pair of sculptures depicting Achello and Helena (mythological famous figures) in bronze, made with the lost-wax technique, dating from the 19th century (second half of the 1800s but made in the Empire style). Standing on a quadrangular column base in golden robes, they hold magnificent cornucopias (a symbol of prosperity and wealth). The heads are adorned with laurel wreaths. Of great aesthetic impact given both by the impressiveness of the figures and the measures (245 centimeters high) as well as the bases that support and complement the bodies, richly decorated with floral festoons and anthropomorphic friezes that stylistically recall the eclectic style typical of the second half of the 19th century.
