Carlo Marcellini 'Florence 1644 – 1713', Florentine Baroque Putto
Located in Bruxelles, BE
Carlo Marcellini (Florence 1644 – 1713)
Putto
White and green marble
41.5 x 73.5 cm
This marble putto carved in high relief, almost a tutto tondo, and set on an elegant green marble background, appears almost naked, sitting on a cloud. His peculiar pose, in adoration, suggests that the work was a part of a larger composition including other figures in devotion.
Published in 2007 by Sandro Bellesi in the monograph dedicated to Gioacchino Fortini (pg.155), this beautiful marble putto was included in the catalog of Carlo Marcellini, a prominent figure in the baroque renewal of Florentine art.
Born in Florence in 1644, Carlo Marcellini received his artistic education in the city of the lily, specializing in stone sculpture and stucco modeling under the guidance of Bartolomeo Cennini before continuing his studies in Rome in the Accademia Medicea founded by the Grand Duke Cosimo III in order to familiarize some more promising artists with the essential “ taste of Rome ”.
Under the guidance of Ercole Ferrata and Ciro Ferri, Giovan Battista Foggini...

This rare and outstanding ceramic court attendant was made during what many consider to be China’s Golden Age, the T’ang Dynasty. It was at this point that China’s outstanding technological and aesthetic achievements opened to external influences, resulting in the introduction of numerous new forms of self-expression, coupled with internal innovation and considerable social freedom. The T’ang dynasty also saw the birth of the printed novel, significant musical and theatrical heritage and many of China’s best-known painters and artists. The T’ang Dynasty took control in 618 AD, when the Li family seized power from the last crumbling remnants of the preceding Sui Dynasty. This political and regal regime was long-lived, and lasted for almost 300 years. The imperial aspirations of the preceding periods and early T’ang leaders led to unprecedented wealth, resulting in considerable socioeconomic stability, the development of trade networks and vast urbanisation for China’s exploding population (estimated at around 50 million people in the 8th century AD). The T’ang rulers took cues from earlier periods, maintaining many of their administrative structures and systems intact. Even when dynastic and governmental institutions withdrew from management of the empire towards the end of the period – their authority undermined by localised rebellions and regional governors known as jiedushi –the systems were so well-established that they continued to operate regardless. The artworks created during this era are among China’s greatest cultural achievements. It was the greatest age for Chinese poetry...

Dimensions: 14 x 6.75 x 17 inches (35.6 x 20.3 x 43.2 cm)
Condition; Very Good with wear commensurate of age and use. Invisible repairs to left ear and parts of mane and hair tuft. A super tight hairline on base of neck barely visible with magnifying glass. Strong and stable and presents beautifully.
The great influence of the horse throughout the history of China cannot be underestimated. In fact, the ancient unification of the Chinese Empire was due in large part to the horse. Their rapid mobility allowed for quick communication between far away provinces. Likewise, the military role of horses aided in the conquest and submission of distant lands. The need to import stronger, faster steeds from Central Asia (as opposed to the native Mongol pony) led to the creation of the Silk Road. The importance of the horse in the history and culture of China can be viewed, in part, through the artistic legacy of this great civilization. In sculpture, painting, and literature, horses were glorified and revered, believed to be relatives of dragons, a theory reflecting their sacred status within society. During the Tang Dynasty, the adoration of the horse can be seen through their burial art. Horse models excavated from mausoleums of the period are among the most splendid and easily recognizable works of Chinese art.
This work is remarkable for the amount of the original pigment that has survived the ravages of time, specifically apparent on the orange saddle. Equally impressive is the fact that the saddle has been separately crafted; it may once have supported a rider who is now lost to us. This gorgeous sculpture is a testament to the admiration and adoration the Chinese had for these marvelous creatures. Although they were an integral part in the expansion and defense of the empire, they were equally regarded for their beauty and grace as revealed by this sculpture.

Han Dynasty Polychromed Horse and Rider
Located in Dallas, TX
A fine Han dynasty polychrome painted terracotta horse and rider. The warrior is dressed in orange and black on a black horse.
Measures: Height 14 inches (35 cm)
Width 12.5 inches (32 cm).
Condition: Excellent with tastefully undetectable repairs.
During the unification of China under the Han dynasty, bands of mounted nomadic warriors from the north threatened the country. In order to thwart their attacks, the Chinese sought to import stronger, faster steeds from Central Asia (as opposed to the Mongol ponies used by the invaders), eventually leading to the creation of the Silk Road. This small sculpture of a mounted soldier reveals the crucial military role of the horse. When compared to the diminutive stature of the rider, the importance of the horse becomes readily apparent. This creature provided security and strength, allowing the empire to secure its borders and expand its influences across Central Asia. The magnificent regalia of the horse, including a brilliantly painted saddle in red and green/gold, reflect the respect this animal received. The warrior as well is gorgeously decorated with a painted red tunic and gray chest...

18th Century Spanish Altarpiece, Wallmounted Sculpture, Carved Gilwood
Located in Valladolid, ES
One of a kind Set of two pieces belonging to a monumental Baroque altarpiece made in the 18th century.
These are two magnificent carvings of large dimensions, which together make a semicircular piece with a profuse decoration also of monumental proportions of plant forms.
Decoration with elaborate carved rolls, which stand out from the general structure. It comes from a Spanish church that housed an imposing altarpiece made in the second half of the 18th century.
The entire visible surface is gilded with original gold leaf, with imperceptible subsequent touch-ups. The back is reinforced, which makes the pieces very strong and heavy.
In the photographs you can see the approach of its collectors: they placed it as a headboard, it looked impressive! But these exclusive pieces can be presented in many possible ways, either as part of the wall or as a work of art.
Due to its enormous size, the configuration chosen for transport is "the buyer picks up the piece" but if, once awarded, you want to contract transport, we will provide it (we have a team of experts).
Total measurements: 450 cm (width) x 160cm (height) x 25cm (depth)
Measurements of each piece (2): 225cm (width) x 160cm (height) x 25cm (depth)
It is a unique opportunity to acquire two exclusive pieces in the world of antiques.
