  • Jean Gautherin 19th Century Bronze Cow Grazing Sculpture E. Colin and Cie Paris
    By Jean Gautherin
    Located in San Diego, CA
This bronze cow grazing was sculpted by Parisian Jean Gautherin circa 1870. Many bronze cows have been sculpted over the centuries but few were sculpted grazing in the grass. This one has a mouthful of it, which is quite rare. She measures approximately 12" in length x 6 1/2" tall x 3 1/2" deep. She is signed by the artist and stamped by the renowned E. Colin and Cie foundry in Paris. "Jean Gautherin (28 December 1840 – 21 July 1890) was a French sculptor particularly known for his marble and bronze statues commissioned by the City of Paris. Gautherin was born to a family of peasant farmers in Savault, a hamlet in the commune of Ouroux-en-Morvan. With the help of a local patron he studied in Paris, first at the Gobelins school for apprentices, followed by training in the atelier of Charles Gumery, and in 1864 he was admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts. The following year his work was accepted at the Paris Salon where he exhibited annually until his death, although after winning medals in the Salons of 1868, 1870, and 1873, he exhibited hors de concours (out of competition). His first major success came in 1876 with a marble sculpture of Saint Sebastien...

  • Set of Two Large Antique Molded and Hand-Finished Aqua Glass Spirits Bottles
    Located in Brooklyn, NY
Set of two American ca. 1910 spirits/wine bottles, both aqua/turquoise tinted with hand-finished details. The one on the left was made via dip molding, evidenced by the glass discontinuity formed by the top of the dip mold. The one on the right is a post-bottom mold-blown bottle. It shows seams, but, like the bottle on the left, the neck and top were hand-finished revealed by the uneven bottle lip and trapped air bubbles. The aforementioned discontinuity (cloudiness) within the left bottle is a product of manufacturing, but there is additional wear (mineral residue, a couple of chips within the glass itself, along with scuffs / general wear). Both have been cleaned, so existing wear cannot be further rectified. Remains a wonderful set of early 20th Century American glass spirits bottles...
