Chinese Snuff Bottle Hand Carved Natural Serpentine Stone Spoon Top, circa 1920s

About the Item

This is a beautiful Chinese snuff bottle, heavy for its size and hand carved from a hardstone with a celadon color, which we attribute to Serpentine stone and dating to the early 20th century, circa 1920s period. The bottle is all finely hand carved in the shape of a fish with an open mouth forming the neck of the bottle and very good detail to the sides (fins) and foot with incised curved lines modelling the fish scales producing a very decorative bottle. It has a lovely light green celadon color. The bottle is heavy for its Size and quite cold when held. It has been hand polished, making it smooth and very tactile. There are many different types of stone used by the Chinese for carving snuff bottles and we attribute this piece to Serpentine stone based on its weight and coloring. The stopper has a top of a different Material, possibly a different type of red stone and is fitted with a bronze spoon inside the lid. Overall an unusual and beautifully hand carved Chinese Snuff Bottle.
