Exceptional Ancient Cypriot Bronze Age Jug

About the Item

Late Cypriot Bronze Age Black Slip Ware Jug, circa 1650 - 1450 BC. Height: 13 cm. Decorated around the body with bands of finely incised horizontal and vertical lines and criss-cross patterns. This exceptional little jug dates to one of the most important periods in the development of ancient Cyprus. This jug was collected by diplomat Thomas Backhouse Sandwith who acted as British ViceConsul in Cyprus between 1865 and 1870. During this time, Sandwith became interested in the island’s history and archaeology and assembled a large collection of antiquities. He was notably close to diplomats and collectors Robert Hamilton Lang, Luigi Palma di Cesnola and Demetrios Pierides. It is possible that he conducted his own excavations, and he became a specialist of Cypriot antiquities in his own right, delivering a paper on the classification of pottery styles at the Society of Antiquaries of London in 1871. Antiquities from his collection can be found in the British Museum, the Leeds City Museum and the National Museum of Scotland, among others. Sandwith was an important contributor to the Yorkshire Exhibition of Arts and Manufactures, which took place in the Coloured Cloth Hall of Leeds in 1875. The jug was exhibited to the public at this occasion, probably in Case 4 of the Fine Art Department: "The whole of this collection is for Sale. Sundry Egyptian Objects, and Cyprian Pottery, chiefly contributed by H.M. Consul, T. B. Sandwith, Esq. of crete, exhumed at Cyprus 1870-2.” (p. 107 of the catalogue) The Exhibition was organised under the patronage of Queen Victoria by the Committee of the Leeds Mechanics’ Institution and Literary Society and Schools of Science and Art, aiming to “serve all classes alike, by the advancement of their moral, mental, and social well being”. It was chiefly meant to raise funds to support the educational enterprises of the committee. A wide range of objects were shown in the Science, Machinery, Manufactures and Sanitary departments of the exhibition. The display of Fine Art Department was comprised of artefacts and artworks from around the world, dating from prehistory to the nineteenth century, and sought to show the evolution of artistic production through time.
