African Tutsi Wood Milk Containers, Rwanda Early 20th Century
About the Item
These authentic wood milk containers from Rwanda can be traced to the Tutsi people, an ethnic group of the African Great Lakes region. From the 15th century, cattle and the arts - among many other things - had an important role in Tutsi culture, giving birth to beautiful everyday objects, such as this jug. Skilfully carved from a single block of wood, this milk container has a simple cylindrical shape. On the sides metal highlights can be observed that are the traditionally used method of repairing the cracks in the wood. Since this container was made to be a utilitarian object, it shows signs of long use and the traditional repairs add a special touch to this beautiful piece. These decorative milk jugs have long been used by the Tutsi people of Rwanda and other groups in rural areas of Burundi, Kenya and Northern Tanzania. Their purpose was to carry milk, water and even food. The simplicity and functionality of the design is the element that brings their beauty,,wonderful art / sculpture.
