Antique French Walnut Oil Jar from 1800's with a Great Patina

About the Item

Antique French 19th century Provencal walnut oil jar or jug made of earthenware. We are quite confident that it was used for walnut oil, because there is still some in the jar. The French walnut oil jars were typically used to transport the locally pressed walnuts, which date back to the Neolithic period. Archaeologists have been able to use modern carbon dating technology and have found petrified walnuts dating back to 6000BC. The Roman’s called the walnuts the Royal Nut of Jove, who was the King of their Mythological Gods. There is a rather crude old homemade scoop that came with the olive oil jar that will included with the sale.

  • Antique Huge Italian Olive Oil Jar or Amphora Great Color Italian Late 1800's
    Located in Chicago, IL
Not all antique Italian glazed Olive Oil Jars or Vases are created equal and this particular Olive Oil jar’s colors are simply beyond spectacular. Dating from the late 1800’s and discovered in a field in the south of Italy by an old friend. Most people refer to these as amphora jars, beginning in the Neolithic Period and running from approximately 9000BC to 3500BC. Generally, Amphorae were used in large numbers to transport Olive Oil and Wine. The design trade and most antique dealers simply call these vessels or Olive Oil Jars. For us, we look at the Olive Oil Jars as pieces of sculpture and they are as good looking outdoors as they are in your home. The color palette and the sheen of the glaze they are simply magical and create a truly great focal point. When we started in the antique business...

  • Antique Cupboard from Ireland Great Patina Unrestored Original Paint, C1800's

The Antique Cupboard that was removed from a home we believe may have been in Scotland. The Antique Cabinet, or Cupboard was located in Ireland, but upon cleaning out the Antique Painted Cupboard, we found receipts from the Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland dated 1967. Certainly not definitive, however, the cabinet is absolutely from the British Isles and more than that, is the fact that no one has attempted to restore, or worse yet, refinish the cupboard. The Patina of Old Original Paint is quite impressive and I only wish we could duplicate it. This Painted Antique Cupboard...
