Chinese Dark Glaze Kitchen Jar, c. 1900
About the Item
As evidenced by the interior glaze, this stoneware vessel was once used in a provincial Qing-dynasty kitchen for storing or fermenting food and condiments. The small kitchen jar has a slightly tapered form, shaped with rounded shoulders, two small strap handles and a slightly constricted neck. The rich, dark brown glaze has a glassy sheen and expresses a range of warm undertones as it sheets across the jar's tapered sides. Textured by firing imperfections, the jar is beautifully imperfect and boasts a natural speckled pattern that calls to be touched.
Jar has multiple hairline cracks along the rim.
