Chinese Glazed Kitchen Jar, c. 1900
About the Item
Cloaked inside and out with a dark brown glaze, this Chinese terra cotta kitchen jar dates to the early 20th-century. As evidenced by the glazed interior, this wide-mouth jar was used in a provincial Chinese kitchen for fermenting foods and condiments. The ovoid, tapered form of the vase is accented by rounded shoulders and a narrow, straight sided lip. The thick glaze drips down the sides, allowing the ripples of its spun manufacture to reveal a range of tonal colors, from deep browns to golden hazel. Speckled with imperfections, this glazed pot exemplifies the timeless appeal of handcrafted pottery.
