19th Century Arts & Craft Majolica Bretby Chocolate Brown Jardiniere & Pedestal

About

A very rare and excellent quality 19th century Arts & Crafts jardiniere on stand manufactured by the English company Bretby, circa 1890. The flared top jardiniere and pedestal decorated in the scrafitto technique (carved decoration) depicting the galleon at sea in a bright orange glaze all against a chocolate brown body. The galleon or 'Craft' make makes reference to the title 'Arts and Craft'. The galleon is often seen as a symbol of the Arts & Crafts movement, I have never seen another example of this jardiniere on stand and it has been produced in the highest of Bretby's quality with luminous, shiny glazes. The contain os excellent with two small chips (restored) to the foot rim of the pedestal. There are no cracks to either pieces. The founders of the Bretby pottery company in 1882, William Ault and Henry Tooth had both earlier worked with Christopher Dresser previously, Tooth at Linthorpe and Ault at his own pottery named 'Ault'. Christopher Dresser supplied designs to both Linthorpe and Ault, and the overall shape and simplicity of the design is very much in dresser design ethos. This rare piece, is a perfect addition to an Arts & Crafts interior, and as always with jardinieres, when a plant is added, the scene is complete giving a wonderful Victorian/Art & Crafts look. This piece is functional, attractive and very rare. It is fully marked to the underside of the jardiniere 'Bretby, England' and the shape number '1376 j'.
