Chinese Blue & White Phoenix & Peony Jar
About the Item
This porcelain tea leaf jar is beautifully glazed in the blue-and-white manner, with hand-painted cobalt-blue decoration against a crisp white field. The jar has a rounded form and flat lid, a traditional shape for jars used to hold Chinese tea leaves or herbal medicines. A greek key border encircles the neck of the jar, a common motif in Chinese art. The sides are brushed with peony blossoms, symbols of wealth and prosperity, alongside an auspicious phoenix nestled in a flowering tree peony. The auspicious phoenix is an important symbol in Chinese culture, a powerful mythical creature embodying prosperity and benevolence.
