Large Antique Hand Hewn Tree Trunk Barrel with Lid

About the Item

A 19th Century hand hewn tree trunk storage barrel with lid. This large lidded barrel has oodles of character. The organic shape of the barrel retains the shape of the tree from which it was hewn, including the crotch or plume that can be seen on both the exterior and interior. The exterior shows the original chisel marks of the maker and it has acquired a wonderful patina from years of use and handling. Similar examples have been attributed to various countries across the globe and while it is similar to a barrel sold by Bonhams and attributed to New England, it is not possible to be certain of country of origin. Dimensions: 27"H x 19.5"W x 19"D Condition: Good/Fair, cracks, chips and wear show age and use. The barrel has a nice rustic appearance overall. Located in Morristown, NJ
20th c., a pair of Japanese Kutani style porcelain lidded jars, stamped on Porcelaine de Paris underside of foot. The mark indicates the piece was produced in the 1970's. The jars are decorated in deep orange, tangerine and gold motifs on a white background. On one side, both jars have matching decoration depicting a scroll showing a pastoral scene. On the other side, each jar has a seperate floral depiction; one including bamboo. Both are highly decorative. It immediately aimed for the luxury trade, selling to the Royal Courts of Europe. After surviving the French Revolution, Porcelaine de Paris steadily produced tableware as well as purely decorative pieces, receiving orders from all over Europe. Productivity was astonishing, creating one new model every day over 30 years! A Chinese four-legged barrel-form brass urn cast and engraved with archaistic decoration from the 20th century. The gently rounded sides are cast with the dispersed elements of two taotie masks, Archaistic auspicious beasts formed by a pair of stylized and confronted dragons which constitutes the features of this mythical creature, abstractly rendered in low-relief hooked curls. Two bands of kui or passing dragons flank the taotie ornamentation on the belly, all upon an engraved and very finely delineated white leiwen ground symbolizing thunder. Raised on four atlantes with a few anatomical engraved details, the urn possesses a flat circular lid decorated with stylized birds and topped with a phoenix-shaped knob with a ring, a propitious symbol in Chinese art. The white engraved ground nicely contrasting with the dark patina along with the Archaistic traditional low relief decoration echoes Chinese archaic ritual bronzes used in ceremonies or buried in the tombs of the elites for use in the afterlife.
