Large Chinese Floral Relief Jar, c. 1900

About the Item

Rendered in high relief, this ceramic jar’s dimensional bands, hobnail motifs and flower-filled medallions add visual interest and texture. Glazed on the interior, the jar was likely originally used for food storage and, given its decorative motif of chrysanthemums, a symbol of longevity, it may have been designated for pickling eggs, tofu, or vegetables.
