19th Century Spanish Pair of Urns, Talavera de la Reina Pottery, Stamped 1899

About the Item

19th-century Spanish pair of large urns with blue mythical masks, dragons, scrolling acanthus leaves, linen swags and with printed text: NO 8 Do, BETTICA and Tortosa all against a yellow background, Talavera de la Reina Pottery, stamped 1899. Talavera de la Reina pottery is a traditional type of faience, or tin-glazed earthenware made in Talavera de la Reina, Toledo (Spain). The area has a long history of pottery, and dishes, jars, ceramics and other objects have been found in recent archaeological excavations. Some of the materials discovered date back to the Roman Empire. Talavera pottery designs have changed over the centuries with patterns from the 16th and 17th century often depicting hunting scenes with courageous hunters fighting a wild animal and later, with influence from Italy, the patterns became more Renaissance in style. The main colors used were royal blue, gold, yellow and greens. Later the styles evolved when the Spanish monarchy began to use ceramic for dinnerware, architecture and building.
