About

The artisan Walter Usai is a fifth-generation potter from the town of Assemini, in other words his family has been making water urns for the entire duration of their oral history. This collection was made as study in form of the classic water containers (jugs & canteens) which each have their own use. The challenge was to work with Walter’s father, Elvio, on paring down the forms to their absolute essence. These are forms that Elvio has been making since he began working in the family workshop as a child - first for utility and now for decoration. Abba Est Vira (Water Is Life) is representative of a world in transformation. Abba 1 - Water urn from the town of Oristano Height 46 cm, diameter 25 cm Abba 2 - Water urn from the town of Assemini Height 45 cm, diameter 26 cm Abba 3 - Shoulder canteen from Roman times Height 31 cm, width 25 cm, depth 14 cm Abba 4 - Truckdriver's canteen from the 1950s Height 24 cm, diameter 21 cm Abba 5 - Farmworker's small water container Height 13 cm, diameter 31 cm Abba 6 - Farmworker's large water container Height 25 cm, diameter 22 cm.

Pretziada

View Profile
Pretziada is an interdisciplinary project combining the worlds of journalism, design, craftsmanship and tourism. Our mission might seem contradictory - we want to bring the world to Sardinia in order to preserve all of the particularities of this Mediterranean island. But we truly believe that, working with full respect for the unique local heritage and traditions we can bring change, modernity and innovation to Sardinia without losing an ounce of authenticity. We live full-time on the island, traveling through small mountain towns and coastal villages, learning about the culture and meeting artisans. Ivano, born and raised in Milan, comes from the world of fashion and contemporary art. Kyre, a native Californian, spent years as a Set Designer in New York. In 2015, we moved to a small, rural corner of southwestern Sardinia to begin Pretziada. We've since been honored to win The Design Prize for Best Design Newcomers and to be included in the Beazley Designs of the Year show at the London Design Museum. Our small, curated collection is composed of a combination of classic Sardinian art-crafts as well as exclusive collaborations between Sardinian artisans and international creatives. Each item is backed up by months of research and confrontation, followed by true interaction among the artists, artisans, designers and us. The collection exudes sardità (the essence of Sardinia) with a contemporary, clean aesthetic.
