Elkington & Co. sterling silver trophy / centerpiece made in Birmingham, England in 1923 with engraved motifs on the base, ornate handles, applied band on the body, and a finial with animals and stylized natural motifs. It measures 8'' by 7 3/4'' from handle to handle, weighs 15.1 ozt, and bears hallmarks as shown. Elkington & Co. are one of the most important names in English silver. They began life in Birmingham as a company of silversmiths in 1836, and experimented with improving gilding techniques. By 1838 they had discovered and patented a new way to electroplate one metal onto the surface of another. The company received financial backing from Josiah Mason in 1842 and was extremely successful. It introduced electrotyping as a new method of production for silver. This antique silver plated tea or hot water urn is unsigned, but presumed to have been made in England in circa 1880 in the style of the Aesthetic Movement. The tapered cylindrical shape of the lid and bulbous shaped body are accented by the bold geometrically shaped handles. The spout handle is done with ornate scroll work and the body is tastefully engraved. There is an engraved rearing lion on the front and a small capital "B" monogram on the back.
