True Pair of Neoclassical Ormolu and Rouge Marble Covered Urns

About the Item

Antique true pair of neoclassical covered urns, probably Russian, in original fire gilt or mercury gilt ormolu and rouge marble dating from the late 18th- early 19th century. Of imposing size the ormolu and marble is in almost mint condition and entirely original. Why true pair rather than two singles? Because the applied ormolu mounts to the front of the base are not identical but facing each other and the applied mounts of figures to body of the urn are completely different. The urns stand on rectangular bases with egg and dart mouldings. To the front of the base are applied mounts of a goat eating grapes directly from the vine. To each side of the base is an applied ormolu mount of a classical urn with griffin head spout, Amthemion decoration and mask. The ormolu socle is decorated with laurel leaves. The cup of the urn is decorated with fine acanthus leaf decoration. The handles to each side are attached by a pair of Fine masks of a bearded man. The rim of the urn is again decorated with egg and dart pattern mirroring the base. Each lid is decorated with applied mounts of Amthemion and forget-me-not flowers and terminates in a berry finial. Each urn has a different applied figural mount to the bowl of the urn. One shows winged Cupid and a female figure fighting over the torch of everlasting love. Between them is a flaming altar. In her other hand she holds a doll and he holds his bow. The second urn has the figure of Cupid and a female figure holding a floral wreath over the altar. He has his torch of everlasting love in his other hand while she is holding on to a vine. One urn appears to show discord in love while the other illustrates harmony. Fine quality and condition. Date between 1790 and 1810.
