About the Item

Terracotta vase with lid decorated with “chinoiserie” subjects "a lacca povera" on a green background Turin or Venice, second half of the 18th century Measures: 26.37 inches in height x 16.92 inches in diameter (67 cm X Ø 43 cm) kg 15 (lb 30.86) State of conservation: some touch-ups in the painted background To the topic of “chinoiserie”, Hugh Honour dedicated a masterful book (H. Honour, La cineseria, Firenze, Sansoni, 1961). In this book the author reconstructs how this fancy spread throughout all the courts of Europe during the Enlightenment and with the end of the Ancien regime approaching. It was perhaps one of the first cultural manifestations, and more properly a demonstration of taste, of a united Europe. In this way it was ahead of its time. The terracotta vase has a typical potiche shape with a circular opening, a short neck that opens into a large rounded belly tapered towards the circular and flat base. A cap lid with an extruded edge, surmounted by a cuspidate knob completes the work. The body and the lid are decorated according to the "arte povera" technique on a dark green background, with glued and painted prints covered with a transparent "sandracca" varnish. The canon of “chinoiserie” in the history of Italian decorative arts lasted for more than a century and was expressed through extravagant works made with a quick and very simple technique: "lacca povera ". On a background of tempera, spread over a light preparation of plaster, the craftsman glued figures cut out from large printed sheets: “chinoiserie”, ships, hunting scenes, gallant scenes, ornaments, flowers. The 18th century publishing industry printed loose sheets, which were produced in Bassano - in the factory of the Remondini brothers - in Augsburg and in Paris. The sketches were then colored, depending on the skill and taste of the artisans, of whom in Italy, especially in Venice and Turin, no memory is preserved. It is precisely the eccentricity and poor technique of these objects that make these works a rarity. Moreover, due to their simple and fragile nature, a small number have been preserved and few of these are in such excellent condition as to have become precious objects today (from Giuseppe Beretti, Fogli sparsi, Milano 2013).
