Ancient Greek 350BC South Sicily Campanian Black Terracotta Handled Kylix Vase

About the Item

A Ancient Greek Kylix vase. Campanian ancient Greek red terracotta stemless kylix (drinking cup) with two handles. from the Magna Grecia period. Made between the 350-300 BC in the Greek colonies of the southern italic peninsula, at Campania. Modeled from red earthenware and finished with glazed blackened pigments. It is embellished in the center with a incised geometric wheel figure and signed in the bottom, with the maker's mark symbol of two concentric circles. Measurements: Have a diameter of 273 mm (10.75 inches), including the handles and raise 57.15 mm (2.25 inches) from the circular base. The Kylix The kylix also known as chalice. Is a typical form of classical Greek ceramics, similar to a chalice and used to drink wine. It has a shallow and wide body with two opposing handles, all raised on a "short vertical foot." The almost flat inner circle on the inner base of the cup, called the tondo, was the main surface for painted decoration on the black-figure or red-figure kylix of the 6th and 5th centuries BC. As the main use of this type of cup was in symposia, they were often decorated with mythological scenes or orgies, which did not become visible until the assistant drained the contents of the kylix. Representations of Dionysus, god of wine, and his satyrs abounded. Greek colonies in Italy Greek presence in Italy began with the migrations of traders and colonial foundations in the 8th century BC, continuing down to the present time. Nowadays, there is an ethnic minority known as the Griko people, who live in the Southern Italian regions of Calabria (Province of Reggio Calabria) and Apulia, especially the peninsula of Salento, within the ancient Magna Graecia region, who speak a distinctive dialect of Greek called Griko. They are believed to be remnants of the ancient and medieval Greek communities, who have lived in the south of Italy for centuries. Condition: The overall condition of this piece is excellent. • Roman 100-400 AD Ancient Greenish Glass Swirled Sprinkler Flask In Perfect Shape
    Located in Miami, FL
Ancient Roman glass flask bottle. An stupendous ancient glass flask, created during the Roman imperial period, between the 100 to 400 AD. Crafted in blown bi-color glass with spirals and swirled decorations. Measures: Height of 5.25 inches and a base diameter of 3 inches (133 mm by 76 mm). Ancient Roman Glass A large part of the ancient glass work repertoire was designed for table use, in particular for carrying and serving water and wine at banquets. Jugs, one of the most frequently used containers, existed in various dimensions (the smaller examples would contain condiments, the largest ones beverages) and shapes: a spherical or more elongated body, a flat or higher, molded base, a trefoil-shaped or circular and elaborate mouth. This example can certainly be dated to the Late Roman period because of the pale, greenish hue of the glass, the simple form of the base, wide mouth, indented rim and especially the presence of the spiraling patterns in low relief which are clearly visible on the body, having appeared as an ornament in glass work from the 4th century onward. Provenance: Saint Louis Museum Missouri, ascension date 1960, acc no 59.87; T.K. Asian antiquities gallery, Williamsburg Virginia; purchased by James & Nancy Markell, Virginia 1980; by descent to Lauren Markland, Fort Lauderdale, FL.; acquired in Palm Beach, FL. in March 7, 2020. Note: Similar examples are in collections of the british museum in london and the metropolitan museum of new york city. Note: It is perfect condition with light natural iridescent, with no cracks or previous repairs. Condition: The overall condition of this ancient bottle...

  • Large Glazed Greek Terracotta Vase
    Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
An impressive large Greek style vase, intricately crafted in terracotta and applied with a vibrant treacle glaze. Shaped like a trophy, this mid 19th century urn shares similarities with the marble vase attributed to prominent 2nd century Greek sculptor Sosibios in terms of shape and style, detailed with unique handles shaped like a swans neck. Unlike the Sosibios vase, the heart of this terracotta vase is largely plain showcasing the beautiful tone variation and lustre of the glaze. To the top, the vase is more intricate, detailed with a section of leaves and berries and stands on a socle carved with leaves to match the lower portion of the vase’s body. Thanks to its large scale and beautiful colour, this Greek style terracotta vase makes a striking statement piece placed on a pedestal or at the centre of a large sideboard...
