Pavel Hlava Cased & Cut Glass Vase For Novy Bor Exbor, Czechoslovakia c.1960s

About the Item

For sale is a rare Mid-Century Bohemian cased glass vase with cut facets, from a range by renowned Czech glass designer, Pavel Hlava, designed c.1957 for the Novy Bor EXBOR glass foundry. Hlava produced the first designs of this type for exhibition at the 11th Triennale in Milan in 1957. From the 1960s onwards, the range was produced for sale, and can also be found in other sizes, as well as different colourways. The vase is in smoked charcoal-coloured and clear glass and is in excellent vintage condition with very minor age-related marks and has some small production flaws in the glass (see photos). Pavel Hlava (1924 - 2003) was one of Czechoslovakia's leading glass designers, responsible for designs for tableware, cut and engraved glass, and off-hand glass. His vibrantly coloured free-blown glass is highly notable and progressive. He studied at the Zelezny Brod glass school from 1939-42, followed by the Academy of Applied Art in Prague under Professor Karel Stipl from 1942-48. From 1948-59, he collaborated with the Centre for Design in the Glass and Ceramic Industry and also worked as an independent artist. In 1967, he taught at the Royal College of Art, London. From 1959-85, he was a designer at the Institute of Interior and Fashion Design in Prague, before becoming an independent glass artist until his death in 2003.
