About the Item

Superb Barovier Toso bowl in Murano blown glass with inclusions of gold leaf and bubbles. Very good condition. Dimensions in cm ( H x D ) : 7 x 15 Secure shipping. "The patronymic hardly sounds Italian. And for good reason, it comes from the Berry region, like these men-at-arms who were rewarded with land for having defended the lord of Castelfranco Veneto, a town near Venice. The Barovier family started to work in the glass industry and in the 14th century they settled on the island of Murano, where the Doges confined the furnaces to protect the neighboring city of Venice, where most of the houses were built of wood at that time. " Although the exact origin of the Barovier family is uncertain, various sources suggest that they originated in the city of Treviso, in the Veneto region. One of the most renowned members of the Barovier family was Angelo, a Renaissance master glassmaker who died in 1461. Angelo Barovier held important positions in the community of Murano and is credited with much of the development of local glassmaking, in addition to the introduction of so-called "crystalline" glass, as documented by Le Filareto in his architectural treatise (Tratatto di Architettura). His daughter Marietta created the "murrine" technique, which Le Figaro describes as "a set of six rows of glass paste, each colored in a different way, from milky white to bright blue and red with white teeth, and assembled in the shape of an ovoid rosette "3. The Baroviers did not limit themselves to working with crystal, but also executed decorations with vitrified enamel covering translucent glass pieces, which produced an effect similar to paintings of the time. A fine example is the Coppa Barovier, now on display at the Murano Glass Museum. In 1878, the company was renamed Fratelli Barovier (Barovier Brothers) under the impetus of Benvenuto and Giuseppe Barovier. Then it became Artisti Barovier. At the end of the nineteenth century the brothers Benvenuto and Giuseppe Barovier introduced the production of murrini fusi. Ercole Barovier (1889-1972), a designer and chemist, designed more than 25,000 objects, the sketches of which are preserved in the company's archives. In 1936, the Barovier family joined forces with the Toso family, also Venetian glassmakers. In 2015, Jacopo Barovier decided to sell 80% of the company's shares to Rinaldo Invernizzi, while none of his sons, nor those of Toso, wanted to take over the business. However, he remains CEO of the company, but it no longer belongs to him. Barovier therefore left the Henokian club.
