Doulton Lambeth Art Union of London Floral Vase by Emily E Stormer

About the Item

A very stylish Aesthetic Movement Doulton Lambeth floral design Vase made for the Art Union of London by renowned artist Emily E Stormer and dating from around 1885. The stoneware vase stands on a narrow unglazed round foot with a round bulbous body and tall shaped slender neck with slightly widening cup shaped top. The body of the vase is decorated with a repeat pattern of stylized floral designs within a raised beadwork border with beaded elements within the design. The patterning is incised against a natural salt glazed ground with fine swirl patterning. The floral designs are painted in tones of blue with white beading with mottled browns and green glazes applied around the lower neck and to the upper and foot rims. The neck of the vase is similarly decorated with flowers and leafy stems and the vase bears impressed makers marks to the base along with an incised EES monogram for Emily E Stormer and assistant marks for Emily Partington and Emma Burrows. Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market. In good condition with light wear associated with age and use and with a bead devoid in the making.

    A large and impressive pair Doulton Lambeth Slaters pâte-sur-pâte style floral painted vases by renowned designer and decorator Frances E Lee and dating from around 1885. The large stoneware bottle shaped vases stand raised on a narrow round foot with large round bulbous bodies and tall funnel shaped necks with a slightly wider thick rim. The bodies of the vases are beautifully decorated with three large decorative panels set within brown outline frames with fleur-de-lis style patterning to the top and bottom with a checkered pattern to the inside of the frame. The frames contain foliage and flowering stems thickly applied in a pâte-sur-pâte style with variations to each of the panels. The decoration overlaps with the frame and extends into the body of the vase. Formal patterning is applied around the neck and top of the vase. The vase is hand painted in tones of blue, brown, pink, white, yellow and green and the whole is set against a stipple natural salt glazed ground.     A large and impressive Art Deco Doulton Lambeth floral decorated presentation vase made by renowned artist Vera Huggins and dated 1938. The large stoneware vase stands on a narrow round skirted foot with a wide bulbous body with a pinched neck and short everted rim. The body of the vase is decorated around the upper body with incised repeat large floral blooms set within an incised shaped border. The flowers are hand painted in tones of pink, brown and green and set against a pale green mottled ground with the borders in brown and the lower vase decorated in streaked flow blue glazes. The pattern around the top incorporates the initials E.F. along with the date 21.9.38 and believe that this was a unique presentation piece for a special event.     This bottle-shaped Doulton Lambeth specimen vase is from the Carrara Ware range which was a stoneware range of moderate output made between about 1887 and 1903. This vase was designed by Mildred B Smallfield (1862-?) who was listed as a senior assistant at Doulton in 1882. It is decorated with a pattern of enamelled stylized flowers in blue, green and white, and enhanced with gilding on an ivory coloured ground. Her assistant was Catherine Vargas. A similar vase by Smallfield is shown on page 81 of the "Lambeth Art Pottery" exhibition catalogue, published by Richard Dennis in 1975.
