Japanese Contemporary Green Red Gold Porcelain Vase by Master Artist

About the Item

Mesmerizing Japanese contemporary Kutani decorative porcelain vase, extremely intricately gilded and hand painted in red and green and generous gold details, on a stunning double gourd body, a signed masterpiece by a third generation master of a Kutani kiln with a history of more than 140 years. His life and works were celebrated in a 2002 exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution’s Sackler Gallery. His work has been chosen time and again by the Imperial household as gifts to foreign dignitaries when they visit Japan. He is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards. Notwithstanding his lofty achievements, the artist adamantly refuses the title of “master artist” and insists on calling himself a “mere artisan” committed to faithfully carrying forward the themes, techniques and the five colors (green, yellow, purple, deep blue, red) of the traditional Kutani palette. He adheres to the traditional “single-firing technique” where sharply defined lines and contours are discarded in favour of a soft and subtle melding of colors and patterns. “What sets a masterpiece apart,” The artist explains, “is how close different colors come to spilling on to each other without actually doing so”. His uncompromising adherence to tradition takes him as far as to maintain a limited supply of “old Kutani clay” used in creating special orders for historical pieces. The impurities in the old clay produce a “dusty beige hue” with random dark spots of iron oxide. The glaze is appropriately thickened to seal the impurities and prevent pockmarks, allowing the observer to meditate on the mysteries of random speckling. This artist's profile is available upon request. This unique piece showcases a breathtaking porcelain canvas of a large double gourd shape with a striking intricately detailed geometric pattern in Kutani deep green and red as background. This pattern creates a beautiful contrast against two sets of spiraling bands alternately swirling upward from base to rim in a carefully calculated pirouette of contrasting colors. One in yellow with an intricate feather motif in a darker shade, deep green and gold, and the other presenting a field of dainty flowers on a white background. The signature shape, colors and breathtaking intricate patterns make it a memorable piece that invites the viewer to get closer to explore and enjoy the details and beauty of this unique piece. This exquisite hand painted decorative vase comes in a custom made wooden case signed by the artist. Dimensions: H 12 in, D 8 in.

  • Japanese Red Green Gold Porcelain Vase by Contemporary Master Artist

Exquisite contemporary Japanese porcelain decorative vase, intricately gilded and hand painted in vivid red, green and deep blue on an elegantly shaped ovoid porcelain body, a signed work by widely respected Japanese master porcelain artist in the Imari-Arita tradition and the recipient of numerous awards for his exceptional porcelain work and his unique signature gold and platinum work on porcelain. In 2016, the British Museum added a work by this artist to its collection of contemporary Japanese porcelain, a large lidded jar in the Imari-Arita polychrome enamel tradition. The petals flying in the wind say that the brief flower-viewing period is soon coming to an end, and are a reminder of how precious and short life is. “Fired-on gold,” this artist’s signature style, highlights unique techniques for incorporating gold and platinum into the hand painting and multiple firing processes that yield a stunningly opulent look. The polychrome overglaze is fired at 800 degrees, followed by the application of gold and platinum that are fired at slightly lower temperature to maintain the luster of the precious metals. As a result, a single piece may undergo as many as 5-10 firings. This artist's profile is available upon request. This piece depicts a whimsical interpretation of a cherry tree with its graceful trunk in beautiful deep blue and its hanging branches stretching across the whole body of this stunningly shaped vase, and blossoms in deep blue, red and purple hanging...
