Japanese Contemporary Platinum Black Porcelain Vase by Master Artist, 9

About the Item

Japanese contemporary decorative porcelain vase, dramatically hand painted in platinum, set against a beautifully shaped porcelain body in black, a signed piece belonging to the artist's signature fish collection by highly acclaimed master porcelain artist and recipient of numerous awards for his exceptional and extraordinary porcelain work and his unique signature gold and platinum work on porcelain. In 2016, the British Museum added a work by this award-winning artist to its collection of contemporary Japanese porcelain in the Imari-Arita polychrome enamel tradition. The artist's profile is available upon request. According to a Chinese legend It is believed that a carp (koi fish) that swims upstream becomes a dragon and flies to heaven. The auspicious carp and wave pattern symbolizes leap and success and has been a beloved pattern used in lacquer work and ceramics in Japan since ancient times. From the end of the Edo period, May 5th has been a day of celebration for the success and healthy growth of children. On this day Japanese households with children raise windsocks in the shape of carp called koinobori. As the wind moves the windsocks it seems like the carps are swiming. This stunning piece in an elegant shape entertains the eyes with two koi fish or carp rendered in platinum swimming toward each other designed to accentuate the rounded features of the koi carp. The platinum-gilded pattern creates waves that cover the entire piece and highlight the elegance of platinum against a lustrous background in black. “Fired-on gold,” the artist's signature style highlights unique techniques for incorporating gold and platinum into the hand painting and multiple firing processes that yield a stunningly opulent look. The polychrome overglaze is fired at 800 degrees, followed by the application of gold and platinum that are fired at slightly lower temperature to maintain the luster of the precious metals. As a result, a single piece may undergo as many as five-ten firings. This porcelain vase comes in a custom made wooden case signed by the artist. Dimensions: H 11 in D 12 in.
