Large Pair of Antique Viennese Silver-Gilt and Enamel Vases Attributed to Böhm

About the Item

Very large pair of antique Viennese silver-gilt and enamel vases attributed to Böhm Austrian, c. 1880 Height 103cm, width 38cm, depth 32cm This exceptional pair of vases, attributed to Hermann Böhm, a renowned Austrian enamellist, exemplifies the opulence of the Renaissance Revival style. After founding his workshop in 1866, Böhm rapidly achieved global recognition, earning high praise for his works at esteemed exhibitions such as the 1873 Vienna Exhibition. The vases, crafted in the late 19th century, are museum-worthy pieces that reflect the highest level of artistry, with elaborate enamelwork and richly adorned silver-gilt mounts. Each six-sectioned body is beautifully painted with intricate Renaissance-inspired motifs, framing oval panels that depict mythological tales, celestial apotheosis, pastoral idylls, and classical allegories. A delicate pastel palette, dominated by blue and red hues, enhances these scenes, set against a cream-coloured ground decorated with polychrome foliate trails, scrolling patterns, and playful putti. Even the unseen surfaces, including the interior and underside, are meticulously adorned, demonstrating the exceptional craftsmanship behind these works. Elaborate silver-gilt mounts, finely cast and pierced, frame the vases, featuring a captivating array of decorative elements. Winged spirits, grotesque masks, cherubs, female busts, and court jesters lend depth and grandeur to the design. The twin caryatid handles, crowned with winged dragon heads, are further embellished with vibrantly coloured enamel in rich shades of red, blue, and green, with select details enhanced by gemstone settings, elevating their luxurious appeal. The flared neck is adorned with finely sculpted floral swags, leading to ornately decorated lids. These are crowned with three-dimensional flowers and leaves, alongside en tremblant elements - delicate ornaments mounted on springs, creating subtle movement and a dynamic visual effect. Resting on shaped silver-gilt bases, the vases rise from an ornate stem centred by a Corinthian column, surrounded by four dolphins with cherubs seated atop them. Between the dolphins stand four allegorical female figures, further accentuating the grandeur of the design. Inspired by 16th and 17th century masterpieces, Viennese artisans often studied historic models from the Imperial Collections, the Green Vault in Dresden, and contemporary art publications. These influences allowed them to reinterpret Renaissance designs with exquisite detail and refinement, as beautifully exemplified by these extraordinary vases. A true statement of artistic mastery, this one-of-a-kind pair is a superb addition to any distinguished collection, celebrating the elegance and craftsmanship of the Renaissance Revival era.
