About the Item

TThe glass vase is surrounded by a tripod, whose legs run out into leafy vines and whose handles are designed as goosenecks. The lower part is held together by three cross-connections, which terminate below a leaf frieze in which the vase body rests with a pine cone. The extremely fine chiselling of the fire-gilded bronze makes one think of Berlin or Dresden as a place of origin. In Berlin it was above all the extremely successful company of Christian Gottlob Werner (1747-1831) and Gottfried Mieth (1765-1834), who was able to produce such fine bronze works, but also those of Johann Christoph Ermisch (mentioned 1794 -1803), or the Bronzier Schroeder (mentioned 1773) - and in Dresden the Churfürstliche Spiegelmanufaktur. Due to the harmonious balance of the vase, it can be assumed that the design itself may be attributed to an architect. In question would be the Berlin architect Friedrich Gilly (1772-1800), the Dresden architect Christian Friedrich Schuricht (1753-1832), but also the architect Freiherr Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff (1736-1800), who worked in Wörlitz in particular, and Berlin resident Carl Gotthard Langhans (1732-1808) could be possible. The ancient symbol of the Swan, which was closely connected with Apollo - in this context certainly to understand in his function as the god of the arts - was based in ancient times on four peculiarities: the long, sinuous neck, the white color of the plumage, his singing and his wisdom. But his combative nature leaves the swan superior to enemies such as eagles or snakes. As a result, the place of installation of the vase could have been a music room, but also a library. Despite the two cracks in the upper part of the vase, this is an extremely well preserved example of a small, rare group of often damaged objects. Literature: B.
