Art Nouveau Poppy Stoneware Vase by Ernest Chaplet and Edouard Dammouse
By Edouard Dammouse, Ernest Chaplet
Located in Chicago, US
Poppies, golden-accented in analagous colors of blue and orange, creep up their leafy green stalks which sag from the heavy weight of the flowers. Like tired heavy-lidded eyes, the poppies symbolize hypnos’ sleep-inducing effects. Dammouse’s somnific symbolism evokes an other-worldly dream-like state and acts as a vehicle to tap into the imagination. Much more than a pretty face, or a pretty vase, this is a sublime piece of art, and Dammouse makes clear the influence of Braquemond and others by employing this Symbolist style. Beaudelaire’s credo that “Beauty must contain the absolute and the particular, the eternal and the transitory” aptly applies. Created while both Chaplet and Edouard Dammouse were employed by Haviland & Co. at its Paris location, this vase is a prime example of Chaplet’s early creative output of matte brown stoneware. Both artists demonstrate a strong link and affinity for Japonisme in the vase’s traditional form and in the painterly approach Dammouse brings to the enamel glaze. His treatment of enhancing the floral decoration with gold detailing calls to mind Kintsugi aesthetic principles. Affixed to the vase’s underside is its original label indicating it was sold at the chic A la Paix, a Parisian gallery located on the prestigious Avenue de l’Opera which opened in 1891, specializing in glass and ceramic objects of art. Ernest Chaplet (1835-1907) Not only was Chaplet France’s premier studio ceramist, the example he set of personally creating a ceramic object from the conceptual phase through modeling, firing and glazing - constantly reaching for new and innovative modes of expression and technique - elevated the notion of a ceramist from artisan to Artist. While Director of Production for Haviland & Co., Chaplet expanded their focus from porcelain into stoneware production and developed the barbotine method of painting earthenware with liquid clay as well as conducted extensive research in glaze techniques. He was awarded a Gold Medal in 1889 at Paris’ l’Exposition Universelle for his revolutionary sang de boeuf glaze. That same year, Chaplet opened his own atelier in Choisy-le-Roi where he continued to produce avant-garde stoneware and support younger talent. Edouard Dammouse (1850-1903) Trained as a painter, Paris born Edouard Dammouse studied under Felix Bracquemond, Ernest Chaplet’s predecessor at Haviland & Co.‘s Auteuil studio. Edouard followed his brother, Albert, and Chaplet to Haviland’s Paris...

Colliery I, a Unique Black Abstract Textured Glass Vase by Bethany Wood
By Bethany Wood
Located in London, GB
'Colliery I' is a unique glass vase from the Molten Landscapes Collection by the British artist, Bethany Wood. An equal passion for painting physically inspires how she controls and manipulates her glass. Recreating the fleeting nature of brush strokes, Wood’s molten colors traverse across the surface of her glass canvases blending in a myriad of hues. Unlike their flat painterly counterparts, these combine and merge, forming spontaneous watery and lava like abstract relief flourishes. Taking inspiration from a wide range of sources, Wood’s influences are taken directly from the world around us, elements of the inner-city sit alongside expansive landscapes. Reoccurring themes are Graffiti & Urban Culture, exploration & travel. In the artist's own words; "As a multidisciplinary artist, I have begun to merge my two artistic passions, painting and Glassmaking. I like to express myself with the fluidity of the material. The Directional arrangement of a color palette can form the depth of an abstract Landscape. I use my own paintings as a reference whilst making in the hot shop. Each individual artwork from my series has been inspired by a specific place. Serendipity of abstraction has always been an inspiration for me; the coincidental elements which catch the eye of the viewer. The palette, composition and depth I have attained are taken from nature, with a bold but elegant swipe of my own personal, Expressionist style" Rising glass star, Wood graduated from De Montfort...

turquoise lava glazed RUSCHA FLOOR VASE 60s 70s hand-thrown marked G.- 863-40
By Ruscha
Located in Kumhausen, DE
beautiful FLOOR VASE attributed to / most probably by RUSCHA KERAMIK RUSCHA KERAMIK was launched in 1948 when Rudolf Schardt assumed the management of Klein & Schardt, his father Georg's ceramics factory in the town of Rheinbach, located near Bonn in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. (RUSCHA is a syllabic abbreviation of his name.) The timing of the re-founding ensured that the company was in a good position to benefit from Germany's post-war growth boom. RUSCHA KERAMIK became a leading manufacturer during the "golden age" of Western German ceramics and is credited with some of the era's key developments. It produced some very successful and innovative forms and glazes, including the 'Vulcano' décor (Otto Gerharz, 1951)—which heralded the move towards thick, dripping fat-lava glazes—and the iconic no. 313 (Kurt Tschörner, 1954), probably the period's most famous shape. Hans Welling, Adele Bolz, Heinz Siery, and Cilli Wörsdörfer were among other notable designers to work for RUSCHA. RUSCHA KERAMIK was celebrated for exquisite wall plates, plaques, and tiles—manufactured for both indoor and outdoor applications—as well as its high-quality vases. Specimens from the 1970s will frequently exhibit remarkable lava and volcanic glazes. When RUSCHA closed its factory in 1996, Scheurich acquired many of its designs and molds; distinctive silver RUSCHA labels were sometimes applied to the subsequent production. Notes on identification: White clay was used practically exclusively. The rare examples made with red-brown clay are thought to date from periods when normal supply sources ran out. Embossed and incised base-numbering was used for vessels. If a vase was made in more than one size, a single digit indicating relative size followed the form number. Low form numbers (< 100) were sometimes preceded by a letter. Like a few other manufacturers, RUSCHA KERAMIK occasionally recycled form numbers, a cause of distress for some collectors. Pieces were never molded with "Germany" or "West Germany." Manufacturer most probably RUSCHA Design Period 1965 to 1975 Production Period 1965 to 1975 Country of Manufacture Germany H / height: 40cm ~ Gew. / weight: 2950grs DM max / diameter max : 16,5 cm ~ DM oben / diameter inner rim: 8.8cm MARKED: marked G...

Fat Lava Style German Colored Ceramic Glazed Vase
Located in Prato, Tuscany
We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Particular and original German ceramic vase colored with a beautiful shade of red and a dark and vivid black; it has a simple shape but at the same time innovative and modernist; the beautiful and bright colors are balanced and proportioned respecting a minimalist design; the glazing of the vase was obtained by first laying down one color, proceeding to fix it by firing it in the kiln, then the same procedure was carried out for the other color; on the bottom is the mark "W. Germany"; it was produced between 1968 and 1971 in a craft workshop in the city of Dresden (then in East Germany), an important center for the production of porcelain and ceramics. "Fat lava" is the name given to a certain style of East German art...

Black Glazed Ceramic Pitcher with Green Glints by Jean Girel, French Ceramist
By Jean Girel
Located in Camblanes et Meynac, FR
Black glazed ceramic pitcher with green glints by Jean Girel, French ceramist This is a very beautiful ceramic pitcher. The shape of the jug and the handle remind us of the shapes of popular pottery works, while the very refined work of the enamel shows the great mastery of the ceramist Jean Girel. The glaze is a deep black illuminated by green glints. It is an object which is at the same time rough and elegant, it emanates strength and softness. Very sober, it can be integrated in any type of interior, particularly of wabi-sabi inspiration. The signature "Jean Girel" is below the base. Jean Girel is one of the most famous french ceramist art masters of the 21st Century. Inspired by the chinese Song ceramics...
