About the Item

Morley Ashworth English Ironstone Vase & Cover This exquisite English Ironstone Vase & Cover, dating from circa 1855-62, showcases the artistry of Morley Ashworth Ironstone. Its striking octagonal form is decorated with a rich deep blue ground adorned with intricate gilt and yellow rococo scrolls of foliage and vases of flowers. The vase features unique dragon scroll handles, and a whimsical double dolphin finial, both highlighted with gilt-heightened yellow accents. Despite a minor hairline crack on one side, its detailed craftsmanship and vibrant design remain a testament to the period's decorative style. Dimensions: 20 inches high x 8 inches x 8 inches (50.8 cm high x 20.32 cm x 20.32 cm) Historical Context 📜 This vase's shape, originally named the 'India Jar', was first introduced by potter William Ridgway. It was a popular design produced by both Ridgway's company, WR& Co., and a collaborative venture, Ridgway, Morley, Wear & Co. Its association with Mason's designs began when Francis Morley acquired their rights, incorporating their distinctive patterns onto this well-known form. The shape's enduring appeal led to its continued production by Mason's, making it a significant piece that connects several key figures and companies in the 19th-century English pottery industry.
