Pair of Ormolu-Mounted Fluorspar Vases

About the Item

These Napoleon III French urns exemplify the elaborate revival styles that dominated the Second Empire. The baluster-form fluorspar vases are adorned by ormolu mounts in the form of twin handles and garlands of flowers and grapes, evoking the grandeur of antiquity. Fluorspar, a fluorescent and highly decorative mineral also known as fluorite, was first mined and used as ornament by the Romans. These urns continue in that decorative tradition, beautifully displaying the stone's violet and jade-like tones. Thanks to the influence of Emperor Napoleon III, who wished to have his name associated with the classical grandeur of Rome, the decorative style of the Second Empire is a true amalgamation of styles. Eclecticism reigned as craftsmen revisited the most opulent aesthetics of centuries past, including the Renaissance, Baroque and Empire styles, creating their own distinctive versions. Today, pieces from the Napoleon III era are prized for their singular, lavish luxury. Mid-19th century Measures: 5" wide x 5" deep x 14" high.
