Paul Soldner (1921-2011) was an American ceramic artist, noted for his experimentation with the 16th century Japanese technique called raku introducing new methods of firing and post firing, which became known as American Raku. He was fortunate in 1954 to find Peter Voulkos as his teacher at the Los Angeles Art Institute. Soldner became Voulkos’ first student, and Voulkos became Soldner’s most influential teacher. Soldner began teaching at Scripp’s College 1957.
He taught also at the University of Colorado and the University of Iowa, but accepted a post as professor of ceramics at Scripps and Claremont University Center (now Claremont Graduate University) in 1969. He then worked at Scripps till 1991. Soldner maintained studios in Aspen, Colorado and Claremont, California.
