Two Chinese Style Enamelled Gilt and Patinated Bronze Urns
About the Item
Two Chinese style enameled gilt and patinated bronze urns
French, circa 1880
Measures: Height 44.5cm, width 27cm, depth 20cm
Each urn, or vase, is of typical form with bulbous body leading to a narrow neck with outward flaring circular rim. The vases have twin ormolu handles in the form of mythical beasts, joined by a champlevé enamel relief panel decorated with sea motifs. The patinated bronze bodies are mounted in finely cast pierced gilt bronze rims and bases, with additional Chinese themed depictions.
These unusual vases are made in France in the late 19th century and are fine examples of chinoiserie- that being a European style interpreting Chinese and Asian decoration. Formed in a combination of materials, the vases would add vibrancy and intrigue to both traditional and contemporary interiors alike.
