About the Item
‘Koulis, Eleusis’ is a vessel, but a body. A voluptuously shaped amphora containing a composition of symbolic embellishments - he is a male trans-species 'Neo-Rhyton'.
A series of these unique 'Neo-Rhytons' began in Athens, 2021 (Rhyta - a ritual vessel of transference, from Magna Graecian antiquity). Koulis is at once a composed, designed object - yet Klaus finds the process a metaphysical untangling of checkered past experiences and new discoveries - as a method of recovery.
Klaus Jürgen Schmidt (b. 1982, South Africa) navigates fashion & contemporary art as an undivided cultural world. Recent exhibitions include ‘Vessels’ - Sized LA, ‘Dancing Plague’ Gamec Bergamo, ‘Industrialism’ Sized Frieze NY, alongside collection ceramics & print at Magliano. These have featured in Vogue, Wallpaper, W Magazine, Acne Paper & Cultured Magazine. His dual textile & ceramic practice convergently evolve as a sub-cultural, time-warped archive. Klaus is based in Athens, Greece.
