Veronese cup in hand-blown purple and golden Murano glass, made by Nason in the 1980s Ø 17 cm h 41 cm Carlo Nason, born in Murano in 1935 from one of the oldest families of glassmakers on the island, he was a great master glassmaker. He grows up frequenting the glass masters who work in the family furnace, appropriating the most refined techniques of glass art, demonstrating an innovative and planning aptitude which he employed in the field of design, but referring back to tradition. In 1925 the Nason Moretti company was founded by the nasone brothers, specialized in the production of furnishing accessories and tableware, where the mastery of the most refined Murano techniques is integrated with a modern vision and careful chromatic research. In 1955 Umberto Nason created an innovative project of two-coloured bowls and glasses which earned him the Compasso d'oro award. In the 60s with the second generation of the family there is a great development of the company which still maintains the characteristic vocation for experimentation. In the 1980s, he looked at lighting with postmodern reinterpretations of designed lights, with the Carlo Moretti Studio line and the series of collector's goblets and tumblers. Since the 1990s, the activity has focused on new collections conceived in a modern and design-oriented key. Carlo Moretti of Venice, founded by Carlo in 1958 in Murano, passed under new ownership in 2013, but is still today an important company for its constant relationship with design. The company is known for the beauty and elegance of Murano glass, reaching not only the tables of the most important families, but also the modern tables of today. Worked with ancient and secret techniques, Nason Moretti glass ranges from warm to cold shades thanks to the wide palette of colors that are blended and from which glasses, vases and lamps are created. Over the course of history, the company had numerous collaborations with prestigious fashion brands such as Giorgio Armani, Valentino and Tiffany & Co.

A mid-century modern reference for today’s Murano glassmakers, Carlo Nason influenced the current tradition of glassmaking on an island renowned for it for hundreds of years. Celebrated for their exceptional designs, Nason’s lighting fixtures are sought after by collectors worldwide.

Learning to design and craft pieces from the family vetreria — rather than partaking in any formal training — Nason was working with the maestros at his family’s company furnace, V. Nason & C., attached to their family home by the time he was 11 years old. Although his roots are in Murano glassmaking, he took inspiration from the clean lines and natural colors of the Japanese metal vases he had seen in his youth at Milanese fairs.

Wanting to produce modern glass lamps, Nason worked with his family friend Gianni Mazzega of Mazzega Murano. The 1970s and 1980s were productive and creative years for Nason as the sole and independent designer at Mazzega Murano. His prolific career has also seen him design for other lighting manufacturers like I TRE, Murano Due and Kalmar.

After a mere four years as a glassmaker, Carlo Nason had his creations displayed at the Corning Museum of Glass in New York. The credit for the artisan’s pieces that were included in “Glass 1959” went to his family’s company, but the designs were all authored by Carlo.

Stepping away from the traditional, vibrant Murano stylings, Nason kept true to his inspiration, working with modern and simple forms that are relatively free of color. Nason told Palainco in a rare 2019 interview that his emotions inspired the shapes. And his legacy includes fixtures that are irreplicable and unreproducible, too — Nason made lighting pieces with multiple layers of glass that would be too costly or difficult to recreate today, and some designs were made with processes and materials now unavailable or banned in the glassmaking world.
