William Leonard Baron Art Pottery Sgraffito Glazed Fish Vase
About the Item
A stylish and decorative Devon art pottery vase decorated in sgraffito with a fish swimming amidst weed made in Barnstaple by renowned artist William Leonard Baron (British, 1863-1937) and dating from around 1895.
William Baron studied at Lambeth School of Art and was trained as a modeller, designer and potter. In the 1870’s he joined Doulton Lambeth leaving there in the early 1880’s to move to Barnstaple and work for Charles Brannam. In 1893 he branched out and started his own pottery.
This small and finely potted earthenware vase is typical of the quality and style of Baron’s work standing on a flat round base with round bulbous body and pinched neck with a flared short trumpet shaped top. The body of the vase is decorated with a fish amidst aquatic weed applied in an abstract style in low relief against a textured ground. The vase is hand painted in tones of blue, brown and cream against a cream colored ground with a blue painted border around the top and bottom of the vase. The vase has an incised signature mark to the base along with other initials which we have been unable to identify.
