"Centaur with Bow," Highly Rare Art Deco Dish with Bas Relief by Williams

About

This dish or ashtray, perhaps unique, is a classic example of Art Deco design, and features a racing centaur figure, letting loose an arrow behind him, all enrobed in a lovely pale ivory-hued glaze over porcelain. The sculptor was Wheeler Williams, one of a distinguished group of American artists called upon to do important public art commissions across the nation in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, including the monumental pediment sculpture with the theme of "Communications" for the Interstate Commerce Commission in Washington, D.C.; the "Venus of Manhattan," a major relief grouping for the Parke-Bernet Gallery building on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, now owned by Aby Rosen; and the "Muse of the Missouri" fountain in Kansas City.
