Large Vintage French L'HERITIER GUYOT DIJON Green Ceramic Frog Ad Ashtray

About the Item

A large vintage mid-century French l'HERITIER GUYOT DIJON advertising ashtray in the shape of a frog in green enameled ceramic, circa 1950's. An iconic figure in the history of French bistros, the ceramic grenouilles or frogs adorned all the tables of French cafes and bars in the 1950s and were used as advertising ashtrays or to collect the money on the counter. Made in various sizes, this one is the largest model. A rare and great accent piece that was originally used to advertise crème du cassis by the producer L'Heritier-Guyot from the French city of Dijon, using the slogan of the brand which at that time was "leave the pure water to the frogs." These ashtrays have become increasingly rare and have not been seen in bistros for many years, as they have a very keen following and are very collectible. Founded in 1845 by Louis-Baptiste L'Héritier in Dijon, France, L’Héritier-Guyot is one of the oldest producers of crème de cassis and remains the undisputed top estate-produced liqueur brand in France.
