About the Item

This is quite possibly the most stylish English silver cocktail shaker we have ever encountered - the clean angular handle and applied stylised shell motifs blend wonderfully with the elegant tapering cylindrical body. A real tour-de-force of the Art Deco period, even better when it can help you make wonderful cocktails for your guests and impress them in the process with such a unique object. Unlike some shaker versions, this example features the aforementioned handle, opposed by a small spout, with inbuilt strainer, and silver mounted plug to prevent leakage whilst shaking. The stepped-dome cover holds an 'icebreaker' beneath the cork lining, which as the name states, breaks the ice when shaking - a neat and practical little addition which we haven't seen before on other examples. it is fully hallmarked for Gladwin Ltd, a Sheffield based silversmith which focused predominantly on silver-plate and flatware, with much of business centred around furnishing cruise liners. A change in style perhaps coincides with the directorship of Grace Craig Gladwin, who inherited the role upon her husbands death in action in 1944 and their takeover by Mappin & Webb in 1959. Given this shaker is hallmarked for 1946 it bucks the post-war depression trend and is certainly a rare example by this maker.
