Antique French Monteith Bowl or Rafraichissoir

About the Item

A must for every wine lover. Used for wine tasting, with the wine glass stem placed over the indent and the cup in the water to rinse out for the next tasting. Chinese used these to chill wineglasses, these stylized bowls were first brought west from China in the late seventeenth century. After the monteith was filled with cold water, each glass could be hung by its foot from a notch in the monteith's rim, so that the bowl of every glass was submerged. The wonderful shape of the bowl lends itself to be used for a center piece. Much of the silver has worn off through years of use but giving it aged patina and great character.
