SS United States Mojito Muddler

About the Item

We currently have four of the original Honduran mahogany muddlers, (barware batons for mashing mojitos) from the First Class bar aboard the 1951 ocean liner SS United States. Reputedly these were among the handful of items made of wood to have been permitted aboard the SSUS per the strict fire safety protocols. The SSUS ship, launched in 1952 which soon achieved the record for the fastest Atlantic crossing, cost a staggering seventy-eight million dollars and was noteworthy for its extensive use of aluminum and its modern décor specified by pioneering interior designers, Anne Urquhart and Dorothy Marckwald. These mufflers remained with the ship until 1984 when the fittings and furniture were auctioned, then they became part of the extensive collection of Dr. Sarah Forbes. The ship is now docked in Philadelphia awaiting refurbishment. See S.S. United States Conservancy.
