The Gorham Sterling Bowl 14064 designed by ERIK MAGNUSSEN
Report by SAMUEL J. HOUGH
The 14064 Bowl is the production version of Erik Magnussen design EM143, which was made in a prototype completed 30 June 1928. The first batch of a dozen 14064 Bowls was completed 28 August 1928.
The average weight of these bowls was 19.50 troy oz. of sterling silver, which in August 1928 was valued at $14.63. The silver was spun, a process which took fifty-one minutes each and was charged at $0.81 direct and $0.72 indirect labor. The silver was also turned for fifty-six minutes ($0.57; $0.51).
The costing slip records thirteen minutes for a blank ($0.12; $0.30); this may reflect the original preparation of the silver sheet. Four minutes assigned to chucks (retrieving chucks the silversmith would use?) cost $0.06. Soldering of ten minutes cost $0.11 and $0.14.
The prepared silver went to a smith who devoted two hours to construction ($1.36; $1.70). Each bowl was then chased for forty-nine minutes ($0.74; $0.69)
Direct labor costs totalled $4.99; when added to the indirect total the labor charge was $9.64. With $14.63 added for the silver, it cost $24.30 to make each bowl. To this were added 30%; $7.29, overhead and 25%, $7.90, profit to make the total factory figure $39.49.
The wholesale price was set at $45 and the Bowls were retailed for $75.
The costing slip for EM143 includes a projection for making a dozen of the bowls. The 14064 costing slip may reflect two runs of twelve examples, although considering Gorham's difficulties in selling Magnussen designs, one run seems more likely.
